In the past, the yearly focus has usually been devoted to one culture, but this year’s Coming Together takes a different turn with “Journeys to Niles Township.”
What all annual Coming Together programs have in common is celebrating the diversity of Niles Township through a series of cultural and educational programs scheduled over six weeks starting in January. Always central to the Coming Together mission is literacy, with a variety of books selected each year to help develop a deeper understanding of the featured topic.
The annual Coming Together opening ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26 at Niles West High School, 5701 Oakton St., Skokie. Free and open to the public, festivities will feature various cultural art, music, stories from local residents, and food.
In addition to Niles Township’s program in February, free activities and programs over the six weeks include book discussions, film screenings, craft and cooking demonstrations, and other events highlighting immigration, migration, local history, community resources and current events.
