Featured obituary:
Mom, Charlotte Gordon Horton, affectionately called Billie Mae was the fourth child of five girls born to Rose DeMarcia and John Gordon, Sr. Mom was humbly born in her Uncle Boodle’s small boat house in Milford, Ohio on August 25, 1924. Mom had a love for the colorful beauty of butterflies. On Mom’s 80th birthday, Mom requested that we have a butterfly tattooed on our shoulder, to symbolize her love and to know that when God takes her home, she will always be with us! Like a butterfly soon to part from its cocoon, her spirit took wings and separated from her body on Friday, March 29, 2019. Mom’s warrior spirit of righteousness and guardian angel heart of kindness truly made her the epitome of a mother!
Mom married her childhood friend, Walter Merle Horton on May 19, 1942. They moved to Illinois as young adults. From this union came 11 children, six girls and five boys. Mom greatest joys were listening and singing spiritual songs, non-stop giving to her family of every generation, never expecting anything in return, watching professional tennis, listening to Reverend Swaggart’s preaching on TV and tenderly cultivating her house plants. It’s pretty impossible to speak of Mom without including Dad; they created a powerful bond and truly exemplified the meaning of partnership. With an entrepreneur mindset, Mom and Dad established a custodian business, working early mornings and late nights to provide for their 11 children, never to accept government aide. By the grace of God, Mom and Dad’s dedication to family first and persistent self-sufficient mindset, they transformed their custodian business into a rewarding real estate business. Mom and Dad established and maintained a high standard of honesty, trust, hard-work and humility, which provided their children with the opportunity to have a clear understanding on how to achieve a full and purposeful life.

The night before Mom’s spirit left her body, firmly holding her daughter Julie’s hand, Mom said the Lord’s Pray over and over again. After saying the Lord’s Pray for the last time, Mom said “I want to go to sleep now.” Mom closed her eyes and departed from us the following morning. Oh how she loved the Lord God, in Jesus Name; a member of Second Baptist Church, Evanston. Illinois for over 60 years! Mom is now in perfect peace in the presence of the Lord, with her husband, Walter Merle Horton, Sr., three sons, Michael Merrill Horton, Walter Merrill Horton, Jr. (Ricky), and Gordon Raye Horton (Dale); two daughters, Deborah Jean Lloyd, and Carolyn Faye Polk.
Mom’s family members that will join her when God calls are daughters, Margo Rose Horton of Waukegan, Illinois; Julie Ann Burke of Loveland, Ohio, Cindy Lou Horton and Opal Horton of Evanston, Illinois, and sons Kim Horton and Todd Horton (Joy) of Evanston, Illinois. Also, loads of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, great-great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
