Featured Obituary:

On September 3, 2021, Ennio C. Rossi, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Medicine (Hematology and Oncology) at Feinberg School of Medicine: Northwestern University, passed away in Northbrook, Illinois. He was 90 years old. Born in 1931 in Madison, Wisconsin, Dr. Rossi earned both his B.A. (1951) and M.D. (1954) from the University of Wisconsin. He interned at Ohio State University and completed his internal medicine residency followed by his fellowship in hematology at University of Wisconsin. Dr. Rossi was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study History of Medicine at the University of Rome, Italy from 1955-1956 where he met his wife, Anna. He served in the U.S. Army as a Captain stationed in Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and Vicenza, Italy from 1955-1958. Dr. Rossi retired from the Army reserves as a Major in 1963. Dr. Rossi served as Attending Staff at Milwaukee County General Hospital (1963-1966); Passavant Memorial Hospital (1967-1973) and Northwestern Memorial Hospital (1973-1996). He also served as Director, “Rube Walker” Apheresis Center / Northwestern Memorial Hospital, (1981 - 1989, 1993 - 1996) and Vice President, Medical Affairs – Life Source, regional blood center for the Chicago area (1988 - 1993). A member of many professional societies such as American Society of Hematology, Hemostasis Information Exchange Group, Society of Sigma Xi, and a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Dr. Rossi held various committee and consulting appointments at the national and international level. An animated and engaging lecturer, Dr. Rossi spoke as Visiting Lectureships at universities and colleges throughout the United States and Europe (1973 - 1991). Dr. Rossi was a very good writer and editor who published over a hundred articles in hematology, specifically on the function of platelets, hemostasis, and other blood disorders. Most notably, Dr. Rossi’s last position was Professor and Chief, Division of Transfusion Medicine, Department of Medicine, Northwestern University Medical School. Dr. Rossi was part of the first group of individuals to receive a Transfusion Medicine Academic Award (TMAA) from National, Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) 1983-1988. Inspired, Dr. Rossi recruited Drs. Toby Simon and Gerald Moss to join him as co-editors on Principles of Transfusion Medicine (1st edition 1991). The book has had five editions and a sixth is now being prepared. The name was changed by the 3rd edition to Rossi’s Principles of Transfusion Medicine with Drs. Rossi and Simon as co-authors of the first chapter on the evolution of transfusion medicine. Dr. Rossi’s role in the TMAA and the book were major steps in establishing transfusion medicine as an academic area that evolved from what had been termed blood banking in the past and making it more a true medical specialty. The idea was that transfusion medicine crossed multiple medical specialties. A charismatic teacher, Dr. Rossi was loved by his students. His lectures were well attended and always received positive reviews. His charisma was shaped by the theater at a young age. Dr. Rossi performed in several theater productions at the University of Wisconsin. However, his most cherished time on stage was Sacred Heart’s Tower Player’s community theater during the 1970s. Ennio’s favorite production “Lion in Winter” where he played Henry II directed by his wife! Ennio was a dedicated family man who loved to travel. There were countless trips to Italy returning to Rome, the place where he met his wife. An incurable romantic, avid Packer and Badger fan, a dedicated academic, respected scientist, distinguished scholar, inspiring teacher, captivating storyteller, wonderful dad, cherished “Bubba” and best friend - you will be missed!
