Featured Obituary:
Bud Powell was born to Orphia Bert Powell and Anna Catherine Weigandt in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in the Portage Park neighborhood of Chicago, one of six siblings. Bud attended Carl Schurz High School, where he rowed crew and sang in the Solo Chorus.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and trained as a Navigator, completing his training only shortly before the end of World War II. After returning from his military service, he enrolled at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and made friendships that would last his entire life. After graduation, he took additional accounting classes at Northwestern University and later joined the family business, A-1 Typesetting.
His family spent summers at Lily Lake in New Munster, Wisconsin, where he met his sweetheart, Martha Frances Smitz. They were married in May, 1952 and settled in Glenview, welcoming their son, Timothy, in 1954. The Powells were active members of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and volunteered for community theater productions with Curtain Call at Glenbrook South High School and Port- ‘O-’ Call at St. Catherine Labouré Parish.
Bud and Martha enjoyed traveling the world, visiting Jamaica, Mexico, Australia and many countries in Europe, travels that Martha helped plan as part of Sun Travel. A stalwart member of the Republican Party, Bud was the precinct captain for his Swainwood neighborhood in Glenview for decades. He loved baseball and was as happy watching the Cubs and White Sox as he was attending his grandsons’ Little League games, where all the kids called him Grandpa.
Bud’s beautiful singing voice made him a favorite at karaoke joints throughout the northern suburbs, a passion which he pursued into his nineties. He specialized in favorite Broadway show tunes and military anthems, and kept detailed lists of his favorite preferred songs for each of the establishments he patronized. He was a dedicated member of American Legion Post 166 in Glenview and held many several offices, most recently Chaplain, and was a fixture at Memorial Day services at Glenview’s Veterans Memorial.Read more from Donnellan Family Funeral Services »
