On Friday, February 14th, at approximately 4:30 am, Pollie Burks quietly and peacefully went home to be with the Lord.

Born on May 22, 1929 in Robertson, Missouri, to the late Rev. Hulitt S. Lee and Luvenia (Bledsoe) Lee, Pollie Ann (named after her paternal grandmother) was the youngest of five children, all of whom preceded her in death. Pollie confessed her belief in the Lord at a young age and spent her early years at the First Baptist Church of Robertson. She loved the Lord and loved to sing. She studied vocals while attending Douglas High School in Webster Groves, Missouri.

Pollie worked as a presser at Drury Cleaners in Missouri where she met Willie Burks. They later relocated to Chicago as husband and wife. To this union, two children were born: Paula and Willie (Billy). Willie Burks, Sr preceded Pollie in death in September of 1976 and Billy in May of 2012.

In April 1973, Pollie joined the Central Memorial Missionary Baptist Church and found her calling in the soprano section of the Gospel Chorus where she led songs in Sunday services and sang for countless programs and weddings. She attended faithfully for years, until her work schedule prevented her from doing so.

In 1999, Pollie retired from The Art Institute of Chicago where she worked as a security guard. Anyone who listened to her quickly understood that she took her job very seriously and that she didn't take any foolishness in "her" galleries.
