Featured Obituary:

James Edward Butler, also affectionately known as “Lefty,” was born on January 4, 1927, to Samuel Isaac “Sam-Ike” Butler and Edith “Tulie” (Holmes) Butler at Illinois Research Hospital. He attended Foster School along with his siblings Sylvia, Samuel “June,” Mason “Pete,” and Johnny. While in attendance at Evanston Township High School, he enjoyed auto mechanic and wood shop classes. He also played football with a semipro team, and he was art editor of the school paper. His senior year of high school, he was drafted to the ARMY-Air Force just two months shy of graduation. At the end of World War II, he would spend time in Texas, Arizona, and the Philippines until his honorable discharge in 1946.

He married the love of his life, Marguerite “Margo” (Anderson) in 1952 at 1607 Emerson Street. They would build a beautiful life together and have three sons, Michael Lee (1952), James Allen (1954), and Russell Louis (1958). He was always supportive of his wife’s social events and Church activities. At one point, he and Marguerite were the oldest living Black married couple in Evanston, lasting 61 years before her sudden passing in 2013.

James was known for his excellent work ethic. He worked for a short while at Hibbert, Spencer, & Bartlett Warehouse, then a photography business on McCormick. He would spend the rest of his career working at Evanston Bus, which would later become the CTA. He spent a total of 28 years here and would retire with an excellent work history.

During his retirement, he enjoyed travelling, fishing, and playing the lottery. His favorite pastime was going to the off-track and sports betting parlor. He read the Chicago Sun-Times every day, faithfully checking his numbers and working hard to solve the sudoku puzzle. He enjoyed sitting at the kitchen table in his favorite seat, where he watched the news and checked in on his family. He will fondly be remembered as a man his family knew they could count on. He was at home surrounded by family when he made his transition on November 22, 2020. Coherent to the very end, he proclaimed, “I love everybody!”
