For many years, May has always meant a trip to Novi, MI, for the Motor City Comic Con. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, that streak ended this year.
I love the MCCC. It's an easy 5 hour drive from Chicago. The Suburban Collection Showplace is an outstanding venue and Novi is a very underrated city. The convention staff is always top-notch and things run smoothly. In short, this is a great comic convention.
I have met many of my favorites at the MCCC, including Lauren Holly, Mick Foley and Joyce Hyser. I saw actress Genie Francis get an unbelievably emotional reaction from the crowd. I have seen lines around the building for the legendary Stan Lee. I can rattle off name after name of television, movie or sports stars who have appeared at the MCCC and I met most of them.
I have also grown to appreciate Novi. We usually attend all three days of the con and also a Detroit Tigers game if they are in town. We have enjoyed meals at places like Bagger Dave's and the Library Pub.
I was very disappointed that I could not make the con this year, but life happens that way at times. I should have stayed off of Facebook those days though. I did not need to see the constant reminders of what a great time I was missing.
My friend Eugene Cresto made the trek and posted some great pictures all day. One after another I saw him with actor Burt Young (from Rocky), wrestler Bret Hart, actress Joey Lauren Adams and more. He was killing me!
I am already looking forward to a return to MCCC in 2015. This really is a "can't miss" on my convention schedule. It is time to start a new MCCC streak for me. Now, if I can just get my wish of actress Jan Smithers being a celebrity guest, I will really be happy.
