Vote YES for Term Limits in Skokie!

During the November 5, 2024 election, Skokie voters will have an opportunity to vote YES for a moderate, 3 term (12 year) limit for each Village position – Mayor, Clerk, and Trustee – thanks to the James Johnson for Skokie Clerk campaign.

Experienced officials can be invaluable, but a steady rotation of representatives is healthy for any democracy. In the past 60 years, Skokie Mayors and Clerks have served an average of 5 terms (20 years), and Village Trustees have served as long as 9 terms (36 years). George Van Dusen, Skokie’s leading opponent of electoral reform, has been Mayor since 1999 and has served on the Village Board since 1984…

Early this year, as part of my campaign to serve as Skokie’s next election official, I launched referendum petitions for term limits and ranked choice voting (RCV) and began collecting signatures from Skokie voters. The Village Board quickly co-opted the term limits proposal and fast-tracked it for the November 2024 ballot, and my campaign has continued to work hard to get our RCV proposal on the April 2025 ballot.

As the lead architect of Skokie’s new electoral system, which was approved by Skokie voters in 2022 despite tremendous opposition from partisan officials, I am confident that term limits (and eventually RCV) will complement our new system, and will help encourage new voices and perspectives in our Village government for many years to come.
