Woman Charged With Accidentally Killing Cousin In Skokie Hotel
The 23-year-old is accused of involuntary manslaughter over the fatal shooting of a relative celebrating her birthday at the Hampton Inn.

SKOKIE, IL — A West Ridge woman was charged Monday with accidentally killing her younger cousin at a Skokie hotel last weekend, police said. Around 11:49 p.m. Saturday, 22-year-old Lesly Coronel, of Chicago, was found shot in the head inside in a hotel room on the seventh floor of the Hampton Inn at 5201 Old Orchard Road. The West Lawn resident was taken to Evanston Hospital, where she was pronounced dead around 12:55 a.m., according to Skokie police and Cook County medical examiner's office.
Police said the person who shot her was also taken to a hospital that night.
Ariana Alcala, 23, of the 2500 block of West Jarvis Avenue in Chicago, was charged two days after the shooting, police said. Prosecutors approved a charge of involuntary manslaughter and she was brought before a judge Tuesday afternoon in Skokie.

Alcala was attending Coronel's birthday party at the time of the shooting, according to police. Alcala was injured in the eye by another attendee at the party and was taken to a local hospital before officers got to the hotel room, according to a release.

Cook County Circuit Judge Anjana Hansen ordered Alcala released on a $100,000 personal recognizance bond with electronic monitoring required ahead of her next court appearance Sept. 17, according to police.

Involuntary manslaughter of a relative is a Class 2 felony under Illinois law. According to the law, a person who kills someone unintentionally commits the offence by doing something recklessly, whether legal or illegal, that is likely to cause death or great bodily harm to some individual. A conviction carries a prison sentence of at least 3 years and no more than 14 years.
"Anyone who knew Lesly," according to a GoFundMe campaign established to assist Coronel's family provide for funeral expenses, "knew she had such a big heart and was always putting others before herself."
