CHICAGO — Gunfire rang out on Chicago's South Side, where seven men were shot Sunday afternoon in a brazen, broad-daylight shooting. ShotSpotter detected roughly 60 rounds, according to officials.

The seven men were standing in front of Little Cesar’s in the 7900 block of South Exchange. CPD Supt. David Brown said two cars drove by, when someone in one of the vehicles started talking to the group and immediately started shooting at them, according to security video.

“We don’t know whether it was targeted or an altercation happened during the conversation,” Brown said. “This is just the beginning of the investigation.”

Brown said the seven men were all together. They were rushed to Stroger, University of Chicago and Northwestern hospitals.

Five men, ages 63, 62, 59, 51 and 36, each suffered gunshot wounds to the leg. All are reported in good condition.

A 34-year-old man was struck in the chest and a 31-year-old man was struck in the abdomen. Both are listed in critical condition at University of Chicago Hospital.

Brown did not know if both vehicles captured on security video were involved in the shooting, or if the second vehicle fled because there was shooting. Chicago police are not ready to release a description of the suspect or the vehicle.

“It does not matter why it happened, it should not have happened,” Brown said. “One shooting is one too many.”

There was no exchange of gunfire between the seven men and the occupants of the vehicle. Brown appealed to the public to come forward with information.

“Whether you saw a car speeding off or hear someone talking about being involved, please come forward,” he said.
