Byline Bank Robber Killed by Police Connected to Earlier Incident

CHICAGO, IL - The man killed by police last week in a pursuit following a bank robbery at the Byline Bank at 4970 S. Archer Ave. was connected to an incident two days earlier in his home neighborhood of Clearing, the Southwest Chicago Post reported.
Photos of Michael Johnson, 26, of the 5400 block of W. 63rd Pl. on Facebook have also surfaced, with one showing him pointing his index finger like a gun.
Johnson was killed by police gunfire near 49th and Karlov on the South Side last Monday. He fell into someone’s yard after being hit and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police Chief Eddie Johnson said the suspect turned toward the officers with a weapon.
The chase, which at first included just a bank employee, resulted in a temporary lockdown at the nearby Edwards Elementary School.

Police say Johnson was the same man suspected of escaping capture after a bank robbery at 6257 S. Austin, another Byline branch, on Saturday, May 7.
