Child Handcuffed at Chicago School for Taking Candy, Claims Mom, Who Plans Lawsuit

A Chicago woman says her daughter was handcuffed and left alone in a stairwell at Fernwood Elementary School for taking a candy bar.

CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago Public Schools security guard has been fired and a parent is suing the school district following a March incident in which a first grader was allegedly handcuffed after stealing a candy bar.

Marlena Wordlow told ABC 7 she plans to name both CPS and the security guard in a lawsuit alleging excessive force, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The child had taken a candy bar from her teacher's desk. Wordlow claims her first grade daughter was handcuffed by the security guard in March and left alone in a stairwell near a boiler for more than an hour at Fernwood Elementary School. The young girl was left with a sweater on despite the day being hot, and she was cuffed near a boiler, according to her mother.

In March, the girl, Madisyn Moore, told NBC 5 Chicago how it all happened.

“They hurted,” Moore said. “He snatched me out of my class. He made me get out in my handcuffs.”

Wordlow removed her daughter from Fernwood following the incident, but CPS has been less than accommodating in finding a replacement school, according to her mother.

The security officer was terminated and given a “do not hire” note on his personal file, according to CPS.
