Family Dollar Employee Killed While Apprehending Shoplifter
The 30-year-old man was shot at close range when a shoplifter fled the store at 79th and Ashland on Tuesday.
Chicago, IL - An employee at the Family Dollar store at 79th and Ashland was shot and killed early Tuesday evening while trying to stop a shoplifter.
The victim was a 30-year-old man who was shot by the shoplifter at close range around 5:30 p.m., according to ABC-7.
"I heard three shots. They sounded like firecrackers. And then the manager ran right past me. He grabbed my arm. He fell down, and he said, 'I've been shot,'" a female witness told ABC.

The man was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
The shooter got away, but police began an active investigation immediately and spent nearly three hours combing the area and reviewing surveillance footage from the store.
