Man Who Shot Chicago Cop In Hand Was Out On Parole: Police
Dashonn Maggette, 31, faces attempted murder and other felony charges from Saturday's shooting on the South Side.

CHICAGO, IL — A 31-year-old man accused of shooting a Chicago police officer in the hand over the weekend on the South Side was out on parole for an earlier, unrelated shooting and has a series of past felony convictions, according to a department spokesman Monday. Dashonn Maggette, of the 7700 block of South Prairie Avenue in the South Side's Chattham neighborhood, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery resulting in the discharge of a firearm at an on-duty police officer and aggravated battery to cause great bodily harm to a police officer stemming from an incident Saturday in the East Chattham neightborhood that happened only a few miles away from where Chicago cops fatally shot a 17-year-old 24 hours earlier.
According to police, the shooting happened around 11:07 p.m. Saturday, June 3, after two uniformed officers on patrol in the 8100 block of South Maryland Avenue exited their squad car to talk with Maggette, who was allegedly drinking an alcoholic beverage on the sidewalk. Maggette fled to a nearby building where he allegedly began tussling with one of the officers, police said. During the struggle between the two, a gun Maggette was carrying went off, wouding the officer in the hand, according to police. After hearing gunshots, the wounded officer's partner opened fire, hitting Maggette. He was taken to Stroger Hospital for undisclosed injuries, and his condition was not released by police.

Announcing the charges connected to Saturday's shooting, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi wrote in his Twitter feed that Maggette had been out on parole for an earlier, unrelated shooting, and Illinois Department of Corrections online records show he was released May 12. Those records also indicate sentences for aggravated battery with a firearm and attempted murder. Guglielmi claims Maggette is a five-time convicted felon.

Saturday's incident was the second police-involved shooting within 24 hours and the third in about two weeks. On Friday, June 2, officers shot and killed Corsean Lewis, 17, while responding to a call concerning a man with a gun in the Washington Park neighborhood. Nearly 10 days earlier, a Chicago police officer shot and wounded a driver who allegedly rammed him with his car May 24, pinning him against another vehicle as he tried to flee police on the West Side.

Earlier in May, officers were involved in a shooting in which they returned fire after interrupting an alleged drug deal on the West Side. Deangela Eaton, 25, was wounded after she opened fire on two officers, hitting one of them in the chest. Luckily, the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest, something police officials say saved his life.
