Officer Shoots Teen Who Approached Him With Gun On South Side

Chicago police: Armed assailant came up to officer's vehicle outside dollar store Monday night before officer shot him.

CHICAGO, IL — A teenage boy is in serious condition after he was shot by a Chicago police officer Monday night, when police officials say he was armed and approached the officer in his car in the 7900 block of South Yates Boulevard. Chicago Tribune reported family members identified the person shot as 17-year-old Kevon Purell, who was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center. Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi reported the incident happened as the officer stopped by a Family Dollar store in between calls when the armed offender approached the officer in his car, and the officer was able to grab his weapon and shoot him.

Chicago Tribune reported police detectives and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, were investigating, and the officer will be placed on administrative leave for 30 days.

Guglielmi tweeted around 9:30 p.m. that the weapon was recovered at the scene.
