South Side Patients Rally to Protect 340B Program That Keeps Care Affordable

SOUTH SIDE -- Patients and health care leaders will gather Sunday, February 1, at 3401 W. Roosevelt Road for 340B Saves Lives Action Day: A Community Celebration, warning that many South Side residents could lose access to affordable medications and critical care if lawmakers fail to protect the 340B Drug Pricing Program this spring.

The event begins with a press conference at 2:30 p.m., followed by a public celebration from 3 to 4 p.m. Organizers say the gathering is meant to spotlight what is at stake for neighborhoods across Chicago’s South Side, where community health centers and safety-net hospitals serve as a primary source of care for thousands of families.

According to the event’s media alert, “The 340B program allows eligible hospitals and community health centers to stretch limited resources, providing affordable medications and essential health care services to low-income, urban and rural uninsured patients.” On the South Side, those savings often determine whether a patient can afford insulin, heart medication, or cancer treatment—or go without.

Organizers warn that “ongoing attacks to the discount drug program threaten patients’ access to care and could force providers to cut critical programs and services.” For communities already facing higher rates of chronic disease, that threat is especially serious. Many residents rely on nearby clinics and hospitals not only for prescriptions, but for preventive screenings, behavioral health services, and ongoing management of conditions like diabetes and hypertension.

The alert states plainly: “The future of 340B is at risk.” Without legislative protections, it adds, “patients lose access to affordable, lifesaving medications and safety net providers will be forced to close their doors.”

Sunday’s Action Day will feature patient speakers and leaders from some of the region’s most trusted providers, including Dr. James Brooks of Lawndale Christian Health Center, Mahomed Ouedraogo of Access Community Health Network, Dr. Lisa Green of Family Christian Health Center, and Dr. Ngozi Ezike of Sinai Chicago.

For many South Side families, these institutions are more than health care facilities—they are anchors of stability. When clinics can no longer stretch resources, appointments become harder to get, programs disappear, and patients are left with fewer options.

Advocates say the rally is about urging lawmakers to act before those consequences become reality. As the Illinois General Assembly prepares for major health care debates this spring, Sunday’s event is intended to send a clear message: protecting 340B is essential to protecting South Side communities.
