Illinois Suspends 12 Rides After Deadly Ohio State Fair Accident

The Fire Ball ride and others like it are temporarily barred from fairs, fests in Illinois.

SPRINGFIELD, IL — A day after a horrific accident left a teenager dead and several others injured at the Ohio State Fair, the Illinois Department of Labor has suspended the use of a dozen rides at county fairs, fests and the Illinois State Fair. In a terrifying incident captured on video, the Fire Ball ride malfunctioned Wednesday in Ohio, breaking apart and throwing people into the air.

On Thursday, the Illinois Department of Labor announced it was suspending the use of the Fire Ball and several rides like it until further notice. The ban includes a total of 12 amusement rides: three Fire Ball rides, eight Freak Out rides and one Extreme ride. The Freak Out had been scheduled to appear at the Illinois State Fair, set for Aug. 10 to 20 at the state fairgrounds in Springfield.

A graphic video shared widely on social media depicted the scene as the terrifying accident unfolded Wednesday at the Ohio State Fair. Bystanders reacted with horror as the Fire Ball broke down, swinging like a pendulum as it hurled riders to the ground. Tyler Jarrell, 18, was killed in the incident and several other people were injured.
