Local Women to Help Raise Awareness of the #1 Cancer Killer

The American Lung Association in Illinois is calling on Springfield women to help raise awareness of lung cancer, the number one cancer killer of women, by signing up for the 26th annual Springfield Golf Classic on June 17. New to the event this year is the LUNG FORCE Foursome, which brings together women business leaders who are passionate about raising awareness for lung cancer in women.

“In the last 42 years, we have seen lung cancer rates increase in women by 84 percent, yet only three percent say that the disease is a top-of-mind health concern,” said Monica Guerrant, development manager for the Lung Association. “The new LUNG FORCE Foursome is a way to educate local women about lung cancer and to help raise awareness for this very deadly disease. We hope that residents come together for this fun and impactful event on June 17.”

The Springfield Golf Classic, held at the Illini Country Club, features two main events, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois Corporate Cup and the Golf Classic Scramble. Registration for a foursome includes 18 holes at Illini Country Club, cart fees, on-course food and beverage stations, a culinary lunch and a premium gift.

The Springfield Golf Classic raises awareness for lung disease, raises money for life-saving research, and funds critical local programing like educational programs to help local children better manage their asthma and free programs to help residents quit smoking. Over the years, the event has contributed more than $1.6 million to fight lung disease.
