'REALAF,' 'IOWASUX,' 'DEZNUTS': Banned 2023 Illinois License Plate List Released

SPRINGFIELD, IL — More than 300 license plates deemed too obscene or hard to read have been rejected by state regulators so far this year.

There are now 7,674 plate combinations that have been permanently banned by the Illinois Secretary of State's Office.

“I appreciate the creativity and pride Illinoisans take in choosing their own customized license plates," Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said in a video message. "But while they're also clever and frequently humorous, license plates must meet the standards of good taste and decency or they make the 'naughty list'"

The Illinois Vehicle Code tasks the secretary of state with rejecting any license plate application if it "creates a connotation that is offensive to good taste and decency."

Plates that are misleading or that would interfere with law enforcement must also be banned, according to the state law.

A small team of staffers in the office flag combinations of letters or numbers that could be read as offensive, lewd or dangerous.

Giannoulias said his team is "well-versed in pithy puns, lecherous language and sneaky swearing."

The newly banned license plates — listed in full below — comprise about 0.5 percent of the nearly 55,000 requests for vanity or personalized plates.

Many include abbreviations for profanity, racial epithets and references to drugs, sex and violence.

Others, like "XKXKKXK" or "QOOQQOO" are considered too difficult to read and potentially problematic for police, according to the Secretary of State's Office.

Illinois car owners pay an additional $94 to get a vanity plate, which only contain letters, and they can pay $47 for a new personalized plate with a combination of letters and numbers.

There are currently 811,351 Illinois vehicles registered with vanity or personalized license plates, and about two-thirds of them are personalized.

Giannoulias encouraged motorists to be tasteful when selecting their customized license plates, though admitted some of the banned names made him laugh.

"Just remember, go ahead and make it clever," he said. "But please keep it clean to avoid the naughty list."
