Secretary Of State Releases 2022 Rejected License Plate List

SPRINGFIELD, IL — The Illinois Secretary of State's Office rejected 383 vanity and personalized license plates last year after they were deemed offensive, lewd or difficult to read.

While nearly 54,000 other customized license plates were accepted by state officials in 2022, the year's rejected requests will be added to a list of forbidden license plates that now stands at more than 7,000, according to the secretary of state's office.

"We love the creativity and pride Illinoisans take in choosing their personalized license plates," said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. "Most plate requests are approved, but a small percentage fail to meet the standards of good taste and decency, and are rejected because they violate the state's vehicle code."

According to Illinois state law, the secretary of state must refuse to issue license plates if the secretary determines it "would substantially interfere with plate identification for law enforcement purposes, (2) is misleading, or (3) creates a connotation that is offensive to good taste and decency."

A small group of people in the vehicle services department review requests, according to a spokesperson for the secretary of state's office. If it is declined, the term is automatically added to the rejection list.

It was not clear if the new secretary, who took office earlier this month, will consider reconsidering any of the historically banned named or make other changes that may relax the restricted list.

"We are always reviewing procedures, but the focus is always to ensure the law is properly being enforced," according to a spokesperson for the office.

Some of this year's additions the banned are clearly offensive, with abbreviated references to profanity — "ZEROFG," "WDAFUK-B" or "OOOHSHT" — or anatomy — "RBNBUTS-B," "FARTING" and "BGBQQTY-A."

Others reference political figures in less than flattering terms — "FBIDEN-B", "FTRUMP-B" or "JBSUX-FF," or are were seemingly considered too difficult to read, like "OQQOQQO," "XIXXXIX" or "XWMWMWX."

But there are others on the list that suggest vehicular services staff under former Secretary of State Jesse White were have been employing an expansive reading of the statute.

"JEEPLF2," "SADBOY1" and "GRTFL-LE" were all added to the banned list this year.

The secretary of state's office has issued 922,147 custom plates, with 312,999 vanity plates consisting of entirely letters, and 609,748 personalized plates, which a combination of letters and numbers.

Personalized plates cost an additional $47, and vanity plates costs $94 more than a regular random license plate, with increased fees at renewal.
