More Details Released In St. Charles Officer-Involved Shooting

The suspect who was shot by St. Charles Police Department officers on Thursday is in stable condition, police said.

ST. CHARLES, IL – A teen who was shot after he pointed a handgun at a police officer Thursday now faces criminal charges, police said. Authorities have identified the suspect who was shot as Christopher C. Kemble Jr., 19. Kemble was taken to Delnor Hospital and then airlifted to a level 1 trauma center where he is listed in stable condition following the Thursday afternoon incident in St. Charles.

Meanwhile, the Kane County State's Attorney's Office approved the following charges for Kemble: disorderly conduct, false crime report, a Class 4 felony; three counts of aggravated assault to a peace officer; and reckless conduct, according to authorities. Once Kemble is released from the hospital, police will work to obtain an arrest warrant, police said.

On Friday, police also released more information into the Thursday incident that resulted in the police-involved shooting. Police said authorities were called to 3400 block of Voltaire Lane just after noon when a caller reported that someone had broken into his home and he believed the intruder had a gun. Following an investigation, authorities learned that Kemble was responsible for placing the 9-1-1 call alleging there was an intruder in his home, which is a story authorities later learned he made up, according to the news release.

Authorities also learned Kemble had told friends he had a gun and planned to kill himself or have police kill him.

When police arrived at the scene, they encountered an armed person running from the area towards a neighborhood park. The St. Charles Police Department began establishing a perimeter around the area to contain the subject, who then pointed the gun in the officers' direction. At that point, "shots were fired by police," according to officials.

No officers were injured but the officers involved were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, according to a news release. The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave and the incident is under investigation by the Illinois Stater Police.

"This is an unfortunate and isolated incident. We are supporting our officers through this difficult time and we sympathize with the Kemble family during this tragic event," St. Charles Deputy Chief Erik Mahan said in a news release.

Voltaire and Peck roads were closed down following the shooting, city officials said. Residents were urged to avoid the area.
