St. Charles Facing 500,000-Gallon Daily Water Shortage, Officials Say
City officials say an additional water source is still needed as demand continues to outpace supply.
ST. CHARLES, IL — The city of St. Charles is facing a daily water shortage of about 500,000 gallons even as a new well project nears completion, according to city officials.
Leaders say the city needs to find an additional shallow aquifer well to support long-term growth and meet increasing water demands, according to Shaw Local. Officials are expected to approve a four-year agreement with drilling company Layne Christensen Company, which will cost about $350,000 annually to continue searching for a new water source.
A second well project on Ohio Avenue is expected to be completed in 2027, but officials say the city still remains under capacity, Shaw Local is reporting.

“Our goal is to try to find a large shallow well,” Wilson said. “Anywhere from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons per minute is the goal. We’ll continue to drill, looking for different locations so that we can find a shallow well for future production and future projects.”
