5th Ward’s Lewis Seeks Re-Election St. Charles City Council

Maureen Lewis on Thursday announced her candidacy for re-election to the 5^th Ward seat she has held on the St. Charles City Council since 2010.

Lewis faces Kim Malay during the April 9, 2013, consolidated election. Malay announced her candidacy in September, after Lewis confirmed she would seek re-election.

“Let me begin by saying thank you to the residents of Ward Five for the trust you have given me to serve as your alderman since 2010. It has been a privilege and an honor to represent you on the St. Charles City Council,” Lewis said in a release. “Today I am announcing my candidacy for re election for 5^th Ward alderman.”

Lewis originally was appointed to the 5^th Ward seat in December 2010, about a month after the resignation of David Richards. This will be the second time Lewis and Malay face each other on the ballot. The two vied for that council seat in the April 2011 election; Lewis narrowly defeated Malay.

“As your alderman, my job has been twofold,” Lewis said in her announcement. “First, I am a connection between you and the city administration. Second, to be a community leader who initiates and directs civic policy which will promote the welfare, safety and success of St. Charles.

“As your alderman I am committed to listening and learning from the residents of Ward Five,” she continued. “To ask questions, to find the long-term public interest of the community and make decisions consistent with public policy. I will continue to make sure our neighborhoods are clean and safe, our infrastructure is sound, and city services are of high quality delivered in a timely and cost-efficient manner.”

Lewis lists among her accomplishments her role in maintaining a balanced city budget, a very high bond rating from Moody's Investment Services, a flat tax levy since 2009 and a healthy financial reserve.

She also points to the pending opening of the Red Gate Bridge after nearly 100 years of debate. The new bridge will “unify the northeast and northwest neighborhoods of St. Charles. The bridge is a community improvement I am proud to say I provided the final unanimous vote to build.”

“Finally, in 2011 St. Charles was named by Family Circle magazine as the No. 1 city in America to raise a family, an accomplishment every resident contributed to and can be very proud of,” she said.

Lewis was born and raised in St. Charles; she and her family are longtime residents “with very deep roots.”

“Our house on Ash Street is my husband's family home, and our grandchildren represent the fifth generation of family to be living in St. Charles,” she said. “I believe my personal background and historical knowledge is beneficial to the residents, City Council and city administration, and helps to preserve our past as we look to the future of St. Charles, this city we love.

“I am asking for your support and vote and look forward to continuing my work on the St. Charles City Council.”
