SOUTH ELGIN, IL — The South Elgin Village Board unanimously approved a 12-month moratorium on data center construction on Oct. 5, giving village officials time to evaluate the potential impacts of data center developments.
The decision follows the board's unanimous rejection in August of a proposal by Dallas-based White Rose Partners to annex land along Kenyon Road for a data center. About 150 people attended the August meeting, while an online petition opposing the project brought in more than 9,475 signatures, according to the Courier-News.
Village Attorney Derke Price said trustees could extend the moratorium if additional time is needed, although courts generally discourage lengthy restrictions.
The decision comes amid growing opposition to data centers nationwide, with a September PBS, NPR and Marist poll finding that 65 percent of voters oppose their construction in their communities, according to the article.
