Drunken Driver Nearly Hits Squad Car, Arrested for 5th DUI in South Elgin: Police

Michael Piepenbrink is being held on a $100,000 bail.

SOUTH ELGIN, IL - A 52-year-old LaFox man is being held on a $100,000 bail on his fifth DUI charge after he nearly hit a South Elgin Police Department squad car early Saturday and was pulled over a short while later.

Michael Piepenbrink has been charged with felony aggravated DUI, according to online court records.

A South Elgin police sergeant spotted Piepenbrink’s pick-up truck approaching his squad car as he was conducting a traffic stop, and pulled over to the side of the road on Route 31, south of McLean Boulevard, at about 12:52 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Daily Herald. The officer feared Piepenbrink was to hit his vehicle. The officer also said he witnessed the truck speed by him and drive erratically.

A preliminary breath test showed Piepenbrink had a blood alcohol concentration of .192, which is well over the legal limit of .08.

Piepenbrink remained in custody as of Tuesday morning. He is next expected in court on Nov. 4.
