Hultgren Condemns Killings of 4 Americans in Libya

Local politicians grieve, condemn violence in the name of religion after U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other American diplomats were slain.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-14th District, on Wednesday condemned the attack at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in which U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other American diplomats were killed.

“Today I join President Obama, Gov. Romney, and all Americans in condemning this violence. It is tragic that this crime was apparently carried out in the name of religion," Hultgren said in his release.

The killings came during an attack by an armed mob of Islamic extremists apparently angry and protesting against an anti-Islamic video created and produced by an American-Israeli real-estate developer, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the video was posted on YouTube, and the attackers claimed it insulted the Prophet Mohammad.

The killings drew an angry response from President Barack Obama, who called the attack "outrageous" and ordered increased security at U.S. diplomatic posts, according to the Tribune report, the Tribune reported.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Obama, without elaborating, said “Make no mistake, justice will be done.”

The attack came late Tuesday evening. Official responses were delayed as U.S. leaders attempted to notify the next of kin.

Hultgren was the first representative from our area to issue a formal statement, which came at 9:03 a.m. Tuesday.

“In the days ahead, I hope America will respond with discernment and swift justice for those who have killed our own," Hultgren said. "Today, we will mourn with the four American families who have lost their loved ones.”
