K9 Officer Tracks Down Armed Robber: Police

A K9 officer tracked the scent of the suspect from a 7-11 in St. Charles to the alleged armed robber's apartment, police said.

ST. CHARLES, IL -- A K9 officer tracked the scent of a teen accused of robbing a 7-11 in St. Charles early Sunday from the convenience store on West Main Street to the door of the suspect’s apartment building on Indiana Street, according to police. St. Charles police officers later arrested Kevin J. Hamilton, of 3151 Medford Court in Streamwood, who was located inside the apartment.

Police were first called to the 7-11 at 1705 West Main Street in St. Charles at 3:49 a.m. for a report of an armed robbery. The lone offender entered the store, produced a handgun and demanded money from the cash register, according to a St. Charles Police Department press release.

The Elgin Police Department sent a K9 officer to assist in the investigation and the K9 followed a track of the offender to the door of the apartment building at 1620 Indiana Street, police said.

“Based on this information and the suspect description, officers made contact at 1620 Indiana St., Apt C,” according to police. “Four subjects were taken to the station for questioning.”

Three of the suspects were released without charges. Hamilton was charged with armed robbery, a class X felony, according to the news release.

A search of the area by officers turned up a silver handgun that was used in the robbery, police said. The gun was found to be a starter pistol and was located in a tree line near the apartment building.

The clerk at the store was not harmed and no customers were present at the time of the robbery, according to the news release. Investigators are working with the store to determine the amount of money that was taken.

Hamilton was processed and taken to the Kane County Jail for bond call. The St. Charles Police Department was assisted by the Elgin Police Department, Geneva Police Department, and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
