If you look at Kane County's 5 year financial plan at www.countyofkane.org one thing is certain. The county is banking on sales and income taxes going up 2% every year. Even with this positive outlook on our state's economic health the county will still end up with a deficit of almost one million dollars by 2018.
The county needs to think of ways to "enhance revenue" and continue to serve its residents. If I were on the county board I would suggest we approach the 22 licensees that will be awarded to operate a medical marijuana cultivation center. The county owns rural land, and that could be an attractive incentive for a potential growing center. The county could lease the land and impose an excise tax on the amount produced.
Fast forward to 2018: the million dollar deficit is now an excess without any cuts to services or increases in property taxes.
