The proposed site at the former mall, located between Prairie Street and Route 38 and east of the Randall Road Jewel, would include 42,500 square feet of retail, 30,100 square feet of restaurant space, 609 residential units and 1,291 parking space, according to the article.

Residents opposed the residential units stating the city already has plenty of apartments on the west side, the newspaper reports.

A proposal by Shodeen five years ago to redevelop the same property was voted down 8-2 by the St. Charles City Council and at the time, aldermen said “they didn’t want dense residential development on the site,” the Daily Herald reports.

Shodeen has tried to attract retailers to the site over and over in recent years but with no luck as many experts agree the area is already overrun by Randall Road retail options, according to the newspaper.

The current proposal, called Prairie Centre, has not yet been brought before the St. Charles City Council.
