KANE COUNTY, IL — A 25-year-old South Elgin man accused of breaking into Kane County homes last month and stealing several firearms, electronics and musical instruments has been arrested. The burglaries occurred on Sept. 23 in the 13N600 block of Coombs Road and in the 41W481 block of Plato Road.

An area resident was able to provide detectives with a license plate from a vehicle that was seen in the area of one of the burglaries, which lead to authorities pulling over that same vehicle in the area of Main and Middle streets in South Elgin on Oct. 8, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies identified the driver as Chefonne Montgomery, 25, of the 600 block of Fairview Lane in South Elgin, according to authorities.

Deputies arrested Montgomery for driving with a suspended driver’s license. During the arrest, deputies saw what they believed to be items taken during the burglaries, police said.

A subsequent search warrant was obtained for the vehicle where more stolen items were located, according to the news release.

A consent search was completed at Montgomery’s residence where deputies found additional items believed to have been taken in the burglaries, including several firearms, electronics and musical instruments.

Kane County Sheriff Ronald Hain said the case was particularly important, “as this type of crime is one of the primary methods that illegal guns make it to our streets and are eventually used in violent crimes,” according to the news release.
