St. Charles Buys Into Green Energy

The city purchases 1.36 million kilowatt-hours of energy certificates to demonstrate commitment to sustainability and to make St. Charles a more environmentally friendly place to live.

The city of St. Charles has agreed to purchase 1.36 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy certificates from Chicago-based Carbon Solutions Group, an environmental asset consulting firm, the city announced Monday. This is the city’s second Green Power transaction with Carbon Solutions Group since 2010.

According to the release from the city, the purchase is part of an ongoing effort to create a more sustainable future through its Green Power Program by supporting renewable energy generated from wind, landfill gas, biomass, and hydro facilities located throughout the country.

The city says the Green Power Program is a 100 percent voluntary — residents and businesses in the community can choose a set amount to contribute monthly along with their electricity bill to go toward procuring renewable energy. All the funds in the Green Power Program are used to buy renewable energy.
