St. Charles Set to Ban Liquor Stores in Residential Neighborhoods

The St. Charles City Council on Monday gave preliminary approval to the ban.

ST. CHARLES, IL - The St. Charles City Council is poised to ban any new businesses dedicated to tobacco or liquor being allowed in residential areas in St. Charles, the Daily Herald reports.

The changes would mean businesses that devote 50 percent or more of its space to alcohol and/or tobacco sales would need to be located in areas that are solely or primarily business-oriented, according to the article. The move, city staff said, is not expected to impact restaurants that bring in a good amount of their revenue from alcohol sales and the law specifically allows tobacco and liquor stores along major roadways in the city, including Main Street, Randall Road or Kirk Road.

Aldermen gave preliminary approval to the ban on Monday and is set to bring it to a formal vote next week, according to the Daily Herald. If approved, One-Stop Liquors, which is currently located at 1401 Prairie Street, would be the only liquor store in St. Charles to be located in a residential area.
