St. Charles Students Receive College, University Honors

Residents of St. Charles area receive awards, other honors.

Molly Abate Admitted to Northern Illinois University

Molly Abate, of St. Charles, has been admitted to Northern Illinois University for the fall 2013 semester.

Northern is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with nearly 23,000 students. NIU has seven degree-granting colleges and offers 65 majors, 70 minors, and 10 pre-professional programs.

St. Charles' Jon Stombres in Lawrence University Opera

Jon Stombres, son of Joel and Debra Stombres of St. Charles, appeared in Lawrence University’s Feb. 14-17 production of Benjamin Britten's comic opera Albert Herring.

Stombres, a 2010 graduate of St. Charles North High School, portrayed Mr. Upfold, the town mayor in the opera, set in an English village filled with eccentric characters, depicts the coming-of-age tale of Albert Herring, an innocent "mama's boy."

Localted in Appleton, Wis., Lawrence University was founded in 1847 and integrates a college of liberal arts and sciences with a nationally recognized conservatory of music, both devoted exclusively to undergraduate education.

Marquette Students Participate in Service Trip

Ninety-four Marquette students traveled 16 hours by van to New Orleans over winter break with the Marquette MARDI GRAS program.

MARDI GRAS, which stands for Making A Real Difference in the Gulf Region and Areas Surrounding, is a student-run organization at Marquette, created in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf region. MARDI GRAS aims to form meaningful relationships within the community of New Orleans, rebuild homes and neighborhoods and raise awareness about the needs of the post-Katrina Gulf region.

Their efforts included clearing lots to dry walling, sanding, painting, building a shed and other tasks that needed to be completed at the sites. Additionally, MARDI GRAS students had the opportunity attend a Tulane basketball game and meet with Ed Conroy, Tulane's head coach, who has been supportive of Marquette's efforts in the area.

James Reed Named to Dean's List at St. Bonaventure University

James Reed, of St. Charles, Ill., has been named to the fall 2012 dean's list at St. Bonaventure University. Reed is majoring in finance.

Located in St. Bonaventure, N.Y., St. Bonaventure University has been inspired for more than 150 years by the Franciscan values of individual dignity, community inclusiveness, and service.

Maryl Behm Named to University of Kansas Fall 2012 Honor Roll

Maryl Behm, the daughter of Skip and Melissa Behm of St. Charles, Ill., was among more than 4,450 undergraduate students at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, who earned honor roll distinction for the fall 2012 semester.

She attended St. Charles North High School. Behm, a junior at KU, was named to the honor roll for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Undergraduates who meet requirements in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and in the schools of Allied Health; Architecture, Design and Planning; Business; Education; Engineering; Journalism and Mass Communications; Music; Nursing; Pharmacy and Social Welfare comprise the honor roll, whose criteria vary among the university's academic units.
