State Sending $9 Million to Area Colleges, Universities

Gov. Quinn announces funding for colleges and universities in Kane and DuPage counties.

Gov. Pat Quinn’s office on Wednesday announced that $9 million in grants to colleges and universities in Kane, DuPage and Will counties, with $2.3 earmarked for Kane County universities alone.

The grants are part of $90 million set aside this fiscal year in the Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program, according to Quinn’s office. The money is to address the critical needs of the state’s private colleges and universities. Quinn’s office said the announcement is in line with the governor’s push to improve higher education in Illinois while creating thousands of construction jobs for the state’s workers.

“Private colleges and universities provide a valuable service to Illinois, and these grants will help them address critical needs and stay competitive,” Quinn said in the release.

Aurora University will receive $1,583,215, and Judson University in Elgin will get $743,885. Both institutions will use the funds for infrastructure improvements.

According to a second release from the governor’s office, another $6.7 million in grants will got to colleges and universities in DuPage and Will counties.

The DuPage County institutions that will receive Illinois Jobs Now! funding include:

Benedictine University, Lisle — $1,649,391.
Elmhurst College, Elmhurst — $1,496,071.
Midwestern University, Downers Grove — $1,492,140.
National University of Health Sciences, Lombard — $799,578.
North Central College, Naperville — $1,307,697.

So far the Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program has directed $200 milion to private colleges and universities for capital needs.
