St. Charles East Students Expelled for Shutting Down Computer Network

School officials said the students were caught after bragging to others about the attack.

Two St. Charles East High School students have been expelled for the rest of the year after school officials said they shut down the school district’s computer network for nearly a month.

St. Charles Unit District 303 officials racked up a $9,000 consulting fee after consulting with the Secret Service, FBI, St. Charles police and outside experts in an attempt to catch the culprits, the Daily Herald reports.

They ended up nabbing the students when the teens started bragging to others about their “denial-of-service attack,” which flooded the district’s server and blocked teachers from using online grading, homework and education programs, according to the newspaper.

The Daily Herald reports the students used their personal cell phones to flood the network with large amounts of data or page view requests, which eventually shut the network down.

The students have enrolled in an online school options available to expelled students and face legal charges through the juvenile court system.
