Survey Shows Majority of District 303 Residents in Favor of Closing Wasco, Lincoln Schools

The schools are projected to continue to see declining enrollment.

ST. CHARLES, IL -- The St. Charles District 303 school board will be tasked with deciding next year whether to keep Wasco and Lincoln elementary schools open.

The school board met on Friday during a meeting at Wredling Middle School where 190 people showed up and 20 spoke up during the public comments section, many in favor of keeping the schools open, according to the Kane County Chronicle. The school board asked district officials to provide them with more information regarding the capacity at the schools.

Survey results presented during the meeting showed 32 percent of the 1,257 who responded to the survey voted to closed both Lincoln and Wasco schools, according to the Daily Herald. The second most popular option with 27 percent of the vote was to do nothing while the third most popular option at 23 percent was to close Haines Middle School and keep sixth grade students at the elementary schools.

The least popular option was to close Wasco, Haines and Lincoln and put a $45 building referendum question on the ballot, according to the newspaper.

By closing both Lincoln and Wasco, District 303 would save $1.7 million, according to District 303.The school board is next expected to meet to discuss the potential school closings on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. at Wredling Middle School.
