St. Charles and state highway officials to meet with community, business interests to provide an update on the project during an open house at the Municipal Center.

If you’ve been wondering — and who hasn’t — if the road reconstruction work on East Main Street (Route 64) in St. Charles will ever really end, an answer may be on the way.
St. Charles officials and representatives of the Illinois Department of Transportation have scheduled an open house from from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, to provide an update on the project and answer questions from residents and the business community affected by the project.
According to a release from the city, the open house is part of a continuing effort by the city and the Illinois Department of Transportation to keep the community and local businesses informed about the work.

“Both city and IDOT staff will provide updates on the current status of the project,” said St. Charles Engineering Division Manager James Bernahl. “We will also let people know what to expect during the winter months, later in the spring/summer of 2013, and give some insight into the anticipated completion date for the project.”
This event also will be a forum for residents and businesses along the construction corridor to ask questions about the project. Members of the business community are encouraged to participate. The city’s Economic Development department also sent letters to all the affected businesses within the Route 64 corridor to inform them of the event.

Work on the $49 million road reconstruction project began in 2011 is expected to conclude in late summer or fall of 2013. The project encompasses 5.1 miles of Route 64 from Route 59 in DuPage County to 7th Avenue in St. Charles, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. IDOT’s plans include adding a center turn lane and drainage improvements, replacing the shoulders with new curbs and gutters and modernizing and interconnecting the traffic signals.
IDOT has informed the city that Route 64 will reopen by Nov. 15 to four lanes of traffic during the winter season through March 2013. After that, construction is expected to resume until the project is completed.
Also during the Oct. 30 meeting, IDOT has agreed to provide some general information about the status of its project at Kautz Road and Route 38.
