PATCH VOICE: Does Your Child Need an Adjustment? When and Why Kids Should See a Pediatric Chiropractor

The when, why and how of pediatric chiropractic from the eyes of a local pediatric chiropractor.

What is a pediatric chiropractor and how is it different?

Ever wonder why parents are taking their kids to the Chiropractor? It’s less heard of and people always seem to be a bit surprised that children can be treated by chiropractors too. The first thing to note is to look for a Pediatric Chiropractor, someone who is comfortable working with kids of all ages and has done extra training to learn how and when these kids need treatment. Pediatric chiropractors will use pediatric specific, gentle adjusting techniques, which are usually different from what you may be used to with chiropractic for adults.

Why children see a pediatric chiropractor

So, why would happy, healthy kids need treatment by a chiropractor? Well, they may be happy and seem healthy but it’s always good to at least have them checked by your pediatric chiropractor to assess if they need treatment.
Usually newborns are checked because birth is a traumatic experience no matter how well it goes. Let’s face it, it’s a big body coming from a small space and it can affect their cranial bones, their neck and shoulders, their hips and their nervous systems. Not only that a condition that is becoming more and more common, known as torticollis could be affecting your child. Torticollis is the tightening and spasming of one of the Sternocleidomastoid muscle resulting in a head that stays tilted to one side. Often times parents are so excited that baby is finally here that you don’t always catch the torticollis until months later, making it harder to treat. A few weeks after birth, your baby might experience colic. This is as hard on the parents as it is on the baby, because they get NO sleep.

Then as baby grows. it becomes necessary to have them checked throughout milestones. They learn to hold their head up, sit up, crawl, stand and eventually walk. All these milestones will affect the adjacent muscles and joint and we want to make sure there are no movement restriction preventing them for developing.
Speaking of developing, Pediatric chiropractors will also check the integrity of the chid’s nervous system by checking their primitive reflexes. Primitive reflexes are a special set of reflexes that babies are born with and as their nervous system develops properly the reflexes integrate and disappear.
