School Districts Set Policy for Youth Concussions, Up 60 Percent in Last Decade

Education and awareness of potential serious injury can help protect kids from serious complications later on.

Reports show the number of kids ending up in hospitals with concussions is up about 60 percent when compared to 10 years ago.

In response to the growing concern of head injuries to young athletes, Illinois joined 19 other states to pass the Protecting Our Student Athletes Act last July. The Act describes a concussion as the result of "a blow or motion to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull." The Centers for Disease Control identified concussions as the most commonly reported injury for school-age children involved in sports.

Several area school districts are on board with new concussion management policies that began this year. You can read more about a St. Charles North athlete who suffered a concussion in this recent Beacon News article.
