144 Quarters Stolen From Tinley Park Car Wash

That's $36 in quarters.

A crook made off with 144 quarters from a Tinley Park car wash.

An officer was sent over to Super Wash on Duvan Drive last week to look into the crime. He was told 60 quarters were taken out of a payment station in one automatic car wash bay and 84 quarters were taken from the payment station in another.

Police said there was “no sign of forced entry but the machine registered change was given for a canceled carwash.”

A representative of the Super Wash explained to the officer how the thief was “able to ‘string money’ by affixing a string or tape to paper currency and feeding it into the machine,” police said.

“The offender then cancels the transaction and the machine refunds the change in quarters,” police said. “The offender then pulls the paper currency back out of the machine.”
