COVID-19 Won’t Stop The Titans From Celebrating Earth Day

Students plan to plant various seeds donated by Lowe's

Today is Earth Day and despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tinley Park High School Titans are determined to still celebrate it. Earlier in the year, Suzanne Hoff who works in Tinley Park High School’s Sophomore Learning Center, worked with Lowe’s Home Improvement store in New Lenox to secure a donation of soil and various seed starter kits. The supplies were offered to teachers in Tinley Park High School’s Science Department to use for classes as well as the Tinley Park High School Ecology Club.

“We are truly grateful to Lowes in New Lenox who filled my car up a couple times with supplies,” says Hoff. “They were happy to know the supplies would be used.”

Tinley Park High School is home to a greenhouse where the Ecology Club originally planned and was looking forward to growing tomatoes and some other plants using the supplies. In an effort to not let the supplies go to waste and to keep students motivated, the staff at Tinley Park High School safely scheduled times for students to come to the school and pick up the supplies.

Students had a choice of various seeds in their starter kits. Some of the items they will be planting include tomatoes, basil, oregano, spearmint, Zinnia flowers, and Perennial flowers.

The goal and hope is that students will give back to the earth and community by planting some of the items at their homes or in local gardens or community areas.
