D140 Students Release Trout at Kankakee River State Park

Grissom and Prairie View students explored conservation and environmental science through a hands-on trout release project

Students from Grissom Middle School and Prairie View Middle School recently took part in a hands-on environmental science project through a partnership with the Oak Brook Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Select eighth-grade students raised rainbow trout from eggs to fingerlings in classroom tanks, taking daily responsibility for fish care and water-quality monitoring.

Guest speakers enhanced the experience by teaching students about trout habitats and the impact humans have on the environment. The project concluded with a field trip to Kankakee River State Park, where students released the trout into the river, tested stream water quality, and surveyed aquatic invertebrates connected to their classroom studies.
