Memorial Teacher Named Hero of the Month

First grade teacher Carol Reeks was recognized by local Homes for Heroes affiliate as September Hero of the Month

Mrs. Carol Reeks and her first grade class were going about their Monday morning as they always do when Principal Joe Trsar asked for the school’s attention over the loudspeaker. A special guest from Homes for Heroes wanted to make an announcement.

Megan Johnson, a local realtor and Homes for Heroes affiliate, was there to recognize Mrs. Reeks as September’s Hero of the Month. Screams of joy rang out from Mrs. Reeks room as District administrators entered to congratulate her.

“We wanted to thank Mrs. Reeks for her hard work, dedication, and the positive impact she has had at Memorial School,” said Johnson. “Congratulations on inspiring the next generation of leaders.”

Johnson implemented the Hero of the Month award at her office to give back to special heroes in the community. She said it is more than just helping people buying or selling a home, it's about honoring the people who make a difference in our community and our lives.

Homes for Heroes is a nationwide program that helps members of the military, law enforcement personnel, firefighters, first responders, healthcare professionals and teachers. Those same heroes are honored by the organization for making their communities a better place to live.

Johnson said Reeks was nominated by Nicole Becker, a Memorial Parent who has three children who have all been taught by Reeks.

“My daughters looked forward to going to school because of her,” said Becker. “If any of her kids ask her to visit them at a sports practice or game, she always does it! She takes time out of her own personal life to show the kids she is interested in what they do. She really does become like a member of the family throughout the school year.”

Mrs. Reeks has been with District 146 for 21 years. As her students congratulated her and exclaimed how lucky she was, she had only one response: “I’m lucky because I have all of you!”

Johnson and other representatives presented Reeks with a plaque and a check for $100.

Community Consolidated School District 146 is comprised of Central Middle School, Fierke Education Center, Fulton School, Kruse Education Center, and Memorial School. Students from Tinley Park, Orland Park, and Oak Forest attend District 146 schools.
