Postal Employee ID'ed As Person Of Interest In Check Washing Fraud: Tinley PD

The person has not been formally charged. They've been questioned in connection with incidents related to the Tinley Park Post Office.

TINLEY PARK, IL — Tinley Park police have narrowed in on a person of interest in connection with check washing incidents.

Over the past several months, the Village Manager’s office, the Tinley Park Village Board, and the Tinley Park Police Department have received numerous reports from residents who dropped off mail at the Tinley Park Post Office, 7230 W. 171st St., only to discover later their checks had been altered and fraudulently cashed, the Village said in a press release Monday.

Victims reported that the payee names were changed, and in some cases, the check amounts had also been modified.

During the investigation, in conjunction with investigators with the United States Postal Service, the Tinley Park Police Department identified a postal employee as a person of interest, police said Monday. That person has been interviewed and provided a detailed statement related to the thefts. The person of interest has yet to be formally charged. As this investigation is ongoing, any additional information will be made public following court proceedings.
