SPRINGFIELD – As more than a decade of war comes to a close in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of the nation’s military veterans have found themselves in need of assistance.
Today, Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill that was sponsored by Senator Michael Hastings (D-Tinley Park) which expands the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund to veterans who were injured serving overseas.
“Our nation’s warriors served their country with selflessness and courage,” Senator Hastings said. “This law expands relief to men and women who faithfully served, and were disabled while carrying out their duties during combat operations.”
Nearly 75% of Illinois’ 800,000 veterans served during wartime, and of those ages 30 and below close to 74% of them have served at least one tour overseas.
House Bill 3833 will also expand relief to members of the National Guard who have been activated for more than 30 days by offsetting their loss of salary in their civilian jobs.
