Tinley Park HS Students Attend Welding Expo at Moraine Valley CC

Industrial Tech students watched ornamental and industrial welding demonstrations

Students from Tinley Park High School recently attended a Welding Expo at Moraine Valley Community College hosted in conjunction with the American Welding Society. Teachers Mark Moberg and Pete Geoghegan attended the event with 26 of their students who are currently enrolled in various classes in the Industrial Technology Department. Both teachers commented that the most important aspect of the Expo was to expose students to welding, a career many of them may not have even considered. The students met with Local 597 Pipefitters and Local 1 and 63 Iron Workers in welding labs at the college to hear from professionals currently in this career field. They watched ornamental and industrial welding demonstrations and were able to test their own skills in a virtual reality welding simulation. TPHS senior, Joe Cartalino described the day saying, “It was really an interesting experience to talk to people who are in these fields and to try out welding in virtual reality.” Mitchel Volland added, “The Expo gave me great insight into the vast careers that use welding.” Mitchel hopes to one day become a Pipefitter and this Expo helped to solidify that choice.
