Tinley Park HS Students Meet with Chicago PD Marine Unit

Students were able to ride along with the Marine Unit police officers

Counselors at Tinley Park High School are encouraging students to make connections with professionals working in the fields they plan on studying. Mrs. Cheri Walsh wanted to give a unique opportunity to the nine students who have expressed continued interest in studying Criminal Justice over the past two years. Their goal was to open the students’ eyes to a unique career they may wish to pursue. On September 25 the students, along with Titan Counselors Mrs. Cheri Walsh and Ms. Kelly Grady, traveled to downtown Chicago to meet with police officers in the city’s Marine Unit. The Chicago Police Marine Unit is responsible for all lakes, rivers, ponds and lagoons within the city of Chicago. They not only enforce laws, they are also the first responders for all water incidents. According to the CPD website, “Marine Operations personnel are trained as divers, in heavy weapon usage, Stingray remote Operations, Stedi-eye night vision systems, AED & first aid skills as well as other very technical skills.” The students were invited to a ride along with the Marine Unit police officers where they got to experience the job first hand. Not only were the students given information about this particular unit but were also given some history in regards to the beautiful city and the waterways. After the visit, the students discussed their Marine Unit experience while visiting Navy Pier, where they had the opportunity to ride the Ferris Wheel one last time before it shut down.
