'We Need To Be There' For Domestic Violence Victims: Letter

The following was submitted as a letter to the editor.

The recent tragedy in Oak Forest where four people lost their lives to domestic violence is something most of us will never forget. It shattered families and a quiet, friendly community.

Domestic violence can impact anyone. It’s all about exerting power and control over another person, and it’s never OK. There is never just one victim and the presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of homicide by 500%.

The Crisis Center for South Suburbia is here to support victims of domestic violence, including children and young adults. We work hard to help victims secure Orders of Protection and provide free counseling and shelter, but as a community we need to be vigilant and watch for signs of domestic violence. We need to be there when someone is in trouble before another life is lost or traumatized.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and while many efforts and activities are scheduled for the month, the reality is that every day should be a day where neighbors and families are looking out for one another, especially in light of the growing numbers of domestic violence concerns.
