Hawthorn Middle School North students were recently charged with the task of designing and building a stable rocket using a 2-liter plastic bottle. Students applied cardboard, construction paper, duct tape and aluminum foil to the bottles to create cone shaped aerodynamic rockets. When the rockets were launched some were stable, others were not. In the process, students learned that NASA looks for rockets that are safe for the environment, provide stability and control, and soar through the air in the direction in which they were launched.
