Bruce Rauner Orders a Hot Dog with Ketchup at Portillo's and People Go Crazy

Campaign staffer takes the fall in silly ketchup controversy, and the campaign says the gov candidate at no time wanted to eat that hog dog.

Visiting a Portillo’s in Vernon Hills Tuesday to campaign and interrupt diners trying to eat their hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner set off a kerfuffle when he ordered a hot dog with ketchup, as a Daily Herald video shows, along with a plain one and one with everything.

After the venture capitalist got slapped around on social media — Pat Quinn’s campaign tweeted a Chicago hot dog pic, saying “This is how it’s done” and the Libertarians tweeted “Ketchup dogs, for shame #NoKetchupDogsForGov #TraditionsMatter“ — one of his staffers, Lyndsey Walters, fell on the proverbial sword, or wiener, as it were, and claimed the ketchup-laden dog was hers.

“Hey, that hot dog with ketchup was for me. What happened to a woman’s right to choose?” she tweeted.

In full damage-control mode (seriously), the campaign made sure everyone knew the Chicago-style hot dog was Rauner’s. After next Tuesday, this will all be over, folks.
